The social media has played a significant role in helping activists in the Arab world and further afield, to orchestrate their fight against corruption and censorship, aiding their campaigns for democracy and free speech. Evidence of abuse in repressive regimes have been uploaded to Youtube, and have been spread rapidly and effectively through micro-blogs like Twitter; on several occasions, Facebook pages have played a key role in maintaining the rebellion against the dictatorship states.
Such social media has evolved from what was initially a free exchange of private thoughts and small talk to a powerful tool for activists who want to spread a political message across the world. Three case stories from Cambodia, China and Egypt.
